Green glaze pools across the relief and moves into darker passages toward the lower body. On the reverse, curling arabesques and medallion-like motifs replace the figure, while the interior is covered in a deep, mottled green glaze.

ARTIST CONTEXT

Makoto Yamaguchi brings together Oribe glaze, relief carving and an extensive vocabulary of historic and decorative motifs. His vessels do not reproduce a single traditional style. Instead, fragments are assembled and rebalanced across forms whose irregularity remains deliberately visible. In this work, the figure becomes both an image and a structural centre around which the rest of the bowl is organised.

ARTISTIC INTERPRETATION

The composition is built on a contrast between stillness and movement. The seated figure establishes a quiet, frontal centre, while the surrounding patterns, pooled glaze and changing planes keep the surface active. When the bowl is turned, the figural image recedes and gives way to abstract rhythm. The work therefore moves between contemplation and material intensity.

CURATOR’S SELECTION

We selected this bowl because its devotional subject is integrated into the material logic of the vessel rather than applied as illustration. The figure remains legible, but variations in glaze and relief prevent it from becoming rigid. Its restraint lies not in emptiness, but in the stability of the central image amid a highly active surface.

COLLECTOR PERSPECTIVE

This work rewards two modes of viewing. From the front, the Kannon image holds the gaze and establishes a contemplative presence. From the sides and reverse, the bowl becomes increasingly abstract and tactile. It can live as a quiet focal object while continuing to disclose its construction through repeated handling and rotation.
