ARTWORK OVERVIEW
This angular tea bowl carries two dragon images across separate faces of its irregular body. Layers of deep green Oribe glaze flow over the relief, meeting exposed cream-and-brown panels filled with geometric, floral and auspicious patterns. The reverse introduces a dense field of curling arabesques, while the dark interior creates a strong visual boundary between the vessel’s pictorial exterior and its inner volume.
ARTIST CONTEXT
Makoto Yamaguchi’s Rimpa Oribe practice expands the vessel into a continuous field of image, glaze and structure. Rather than treating the bowl as a neutral support, he allows its compressed planes and uneven rim to determine how the decoration unfolds. On the larger surface of a tea bowl, this approach becomes especially architectural: each face functions independently while remaining part of a single composition.
ARTISTIC INTERPRETATION
The two dragons create a form of visual counterpoint. Neither image can be understood from only one position; the bowl must be turned for the composition to unfold. Between them, patterned panels interrupt and redirect the eye, while the green glaze connects otherwise separate images. The result is not a fixed frontal picture but a sequence experienced through movement.
CURATOR’S SELECTION
We selected this work for the ambition of its surface orchestration. The dragons, patterned ground, angular body and dark interior are held in productive tension without collapsing into visual noise. Its strongest quality is the way pictorial density remains legible across an intentionally irregular form.
COLLECTOR PERSPECTIVE
The bowl has several convincing viewpoints rather than a single designated front. Placed in a room, it can be rotated over time to reveal a different emphasis; held in the hands, its irregular planes and raised relief make the act of viewing physical. It carries the presence of a sculptural object while retaining the intimacy of tea ware.
